Nijla- writer, filmmaker, photographer- media/pop culture critic and reformer- from the SF Bay Area! I bake apple pies and write poems. I sing and cry, laugh and read. This blog is a thoughtful dissection of media, popular culture, and politics, as well as insight into this peculiar world and life of mine.
This blog, as well as my production company (Sweet Potato Pie Productions), are named for the delectable, life-changing sweet potato pies that my grandmother Geneva Wright used to make.

It’s nice to meet you…
Thank you for the concrete diaries. I live in Philadelphia but was raised in San Francisco. I grew up very early due to the incessant verbal assaults I would receive while innocently standing at the bus stop. At a very young age I learned to put a wall around my powerful self, and hide my potential because of how these ‘assaults’ made me feel. I didn’t want to draw attention to myself in any way. They took my power away and it has taken a very very long time to stand tall again.
I have notice that here in Philadelphia men, of all races, do not come at you at all. I was wondering if this is a regional thing? I didn’t feel this in the South either. Here in Philadelphia, there is a greeting, that’s it. It may be loaded with some intent, but it feels polite and restrained. Something about the Bay Area is different. I don’t know what it is.
Thank you for bringing to light this issue, because as young girls develop into their bodies at a younger age, these verbal assaults affect us as deeply as if they were physical.
Blessings….
